Dogs are wonderful pets but they can be very messy in and around the house.
Cleaning up after our precious pooches isn’t just about visible messes though, it’s also about the awful smell they leave behind that can be had to remove from the home.
According to professional cleaner Kacie Stephens from The Big Clean Co, that stench isn’t caused by dog hair, it’s actually from dander (flakes of skin) which spreads everywhere.

To help us get rid of the smell, Kacie shared four top cleaning tips in a video on her TikTok channel.
“First you’ll need to clean every horizontal surface in your house: skirting boards, power points and window tracks,” she said in a voiceover.
To clean these areas you’ll need a vacuum and a microfibre cloth.
Next Kacie recommends cleaning air filters and exhaust fans using a microfibre duster with a long handle.
Once you’ve done that it’s time to “dust and wash the entire surface of your wall”.

And the final tip is an important one regardless of whether you’re cleaning to remove dog smell or not.
“Clean your vacuum filter otherwise you’re just blowing stinky air back in,” Kacie said.
Kacie’s dog smell cleaning advice definitely struck a chord with her followers, who have viewed it more than 430,000 times so far.
But some viewers commented that they can’t get rid of the smell no matter how much they clean. Unfortunately Kacie had bad news for anyone with this problem.
“We are renting a house and the owners had two big dogs… cannot get the smell out of my room,” one person posted.
Kacie responded, “It’s most likely in the underlay of the carpet.”

That means for some people, the only way to remove dog smell is to replace their carpets.
Or you could try switching your flooring as one woman did.
“I removed all carpets from downstairs and put wood flooring down. Easier to clean and wash,” she said.
Others who watched the clip wanted to know what vacuum Kacie uses and would recommend for pet hair.
She revealed The Big Clean Co uses a Henry vacuum with a brush head attachment for pet hair.
Another option for removing pet hair, which you can use to improve the performance of the vacuum you already have, is to ‘rake’ your carpet.
To do this you run a window squeegee over the carpet in a raking motion. You can either use a small squeegee and get down on your hands and knees, or buy a squeegee with a long handle.
This is an affordable option for dealing with pet hair, but won’t help so much with the smell. For that, you’ll have to put in some elbow grease and try Kacie’s tips above.
